Why You Shouldn’t Proofread Your Company Ecard

It’s easy to make a misstake.

Yes, we did that on purpose.

Over our busy festive period, we got quite a few emails from customers who, once they’d purchased their company Christmas ecard, realised that they made a bit of a boo-boo – missing an apostrophe here, a letter there and so on.

“No problem,” we said and helped them re-create and send their e-greeting again.

Luckily, in these cases, the corporate ecards were sent as links or scheduled for to be delivered at a future time and date, so no harm was done.

But what if they hadn’t? How can these errors be avoided?

When you’re the charged with the task of creating and sending out your next company mail-out it’s often hard to see the wood for the trees when it comes to those pesky typos, grammatical slip-ups and the like. Proofreading is one of those skills that you can be absolutely brilliant at, until it comes to reading your own work.

Thankfully, Wired magazine  recently confirmed that the reason these mistakes slip through the net is not because we’re careless but, rather, because we care. And they even got a scientist to back it up. With the help of a Psychologist (Tom Stafford from the University of Sheffield) the article, “What’s Up With That: Why It’s So Hard to Catch Your Own Typos”, explains:

When you’re writing, you’re trying to convey meaning. It’s a very high level task… When we’re proofreading our own work, we know the meaning we want to convey. Because we expect that meaning to be there, it’s easier for us to miss when parts (or all) of it are absent.

So now we know the science behind it, how do we banish those embarrassing blunders from our business e-cards and email marketing campaigns once and for all? The answer’s quite simple: don’t proofread, get someone else to do it.

A fresh pair of eyes on your copy might sound cliché but can work a treat.

Obviously, we’re not suggesting that you make someone else correct a first draft – but when you think you’re ready to send your email out into the big wide world, don’t. Pass it on to the person sitting next to you instead.

Bespoke Christmas Ecards for Business: A ‘How To’ Guide

With only just over a third of the year left to go, it’s around this time that companies wishing to send a bespoke ecard start to get in touch to discuss their requirements. Unlike our DIY company Christmas ecard service — where you can customise and arrange to be send your greeting in a matter of minutes — our bespoke ecards for Christmas take a little more planning and consideration.

So we thought we’d take this opportunity to give you a little bit of an introduction to the process and some more information of what we’ll need from you to make it happen.

Your Bespoke Ecard Brief

The most important thing about creating a great bespoke business e greeting is having a good brief. The more information you can provide us with, the better equipped we’ll be to create just the right design for you and your organisation.

First off, we need to know if you’d like your Christmas e card to be animated or static – when making this decision, it’s important to note that you can send a static ecard in the body of an email, but an animated ecard will be shown as a link which your recipients can click on to open up the card in their chosen browser.

Secondly, it’s time to choose whether you want us to work on an existing design from our range of corporate ecards or whether you’d like to commission a completely new idea from scratch. If you prefer the latter, let us know as much as you can about the kind of thing you’d like.

Thirdly, you’ll need to tell us what you want your message to say and if you’d like to include your logo and other bits, such as a link to your website or the logo of your company’s chosen charity if you’re making a donation this Christmas.

Finally, we need to know if you’d like your ecard to include music.

Once we’ve got all this information, we’ll be able to quote a price and timescale for the ecard’s completion, depending on the complexity of the design. We’ll require a 50% deposit to start work on your card. Then, when we’re nearing completion we’ll send you a link to your email greeting so you can let us know of any last minute changes needed.

And that’s it. All that’s left to do is send your card – which you can either do yourself or we can do on your company’s behalf.

The Impact ‘Connecting’ Can Have On Your Business

With the upsurge of social media platforms proving to be an axiomatically effective marketing tool, we must consider that new ways of marketing a business are clearly based upon ‘connecting’. By connecting, I am referring to the importance of B2B and B2C interaction, conversation, attention and engagement. More and more, customers, consumers and affiliates are taking on the role of marketer for businesses as a result of social media and online interaction; it is they who drive the conversation about your brand and it is this conversation that will effectively have an impact on the way the company operates.

We’ve found a particularly interesting blog based on connecting, by Larry Benet and its cultivating impact on business, who says,

‘Connecting is the ability to identify and relate with people to increase your influence with them. If you can add value, serve others and give freely, then you can connect with anyone, power your business and get whatever you want faster.’

Take a look here, #2: Connect With Anyone You Want by Giving Value

The cultivation of strong relationships with clients, partners and consumers means that their potentially critical influences will be instead met with loyalty and strong brand awareness. So, in light of the prominence that connecting has to your business, here’s a preview of one of our ecards that will be available on the website when it launches.

This ecard is the perfect way for you to connect with clients, consumers and partners. Through regular interaction, this will add significant value to your business.

What exactly is an ecard and what’s in it for you?

An ecard, or electronic card, is basically a greetings card or postcard created using digital media instead of paper. Ecards are sent and received by email and can also be shared on social media.

Where did ecards originate?

Judith Donath of the MIT Media Lab is credited with creating the first online postcard service in 1994, named The Electric Postcard. After a slow start (just 10-20 cards a day were sent in the first weeks) the concept took off and during the peak of the 1995-96 Christmas season more than 19,000 cards were sent a day.

Since then, the technology behind the ecard has evolved significantly and the market for ecards has proliferated. Initially most ecards were free, often sponsored by advertising. While free ecards are still prevalent, many of the better quality providers now charge a fee for premium ecards which are free from advertising and offer a range of additional features and benefits, as well as guaranteeing stringent policies on data protection and security. Pricing typically ranges from a one-off fee per card to an annual membership which enables users to send multiple cards throughout the duration of their membership.

What are the benefits of ecards?

The digital nature of ecards allows for great versatility and offers a raft of benefits. For example, ecards are immediate. There is no time delay between sending and receipt, and no risk of delivery delays. An ecard can be sent to multiple recipients at once, providing considerable savings in time and costs. Ecards are also considered more environmentally friendly than paper cards, not only in terms of their absence of paper but also because no physical delivery means a reduced carbon footprint.

As technology continues to advance, ecards are becoming increasingly creative and innovative, delivering a rich multimedia experience. Unsurprisingly, this is being noticed by the business community and marketing decision-makers are beginning to realise the power of ecards to engage audience attention and trigger a positive response.

A wide variety of different types of ecard is now available. ‘Static’ ecards are comparable to traditional printed cards in that they use a visual image and/or text with space for a personal message to be added. Animated and video cards use Flash or HTML5 technology to combine moving images with music and sound effects to create anything from a basic cartoon-style animation to the equivalent of a mini advert or short film. Animated cards can also include interactivity, involving the recipient in making selections and taking online actions. These are now further evolving to provide entertaining interactive online games, which are proving of strong interest to marketers for their ability to grab audience attention and their tendency to be widely shared and even go viral.

How are ecards delivered?

Once an ecard has been either selected from a range of online templates and customized for a specific purpose, or custom designed by an ecard provider, it is then delivered to the recipients by email. Here, there are two main options. Simple ecards can be displayed as an image within the body of an email message. However, for cards that employ richer use of media such as Flash animation and video, the cards are hosted on the ecard provider’s website and a link to the card is emailed to recipients.

Proving their worth

The digital nature of ecards enables senders to access valuable data about who has viewed their ecards. This is a vital benefit for business ecard users, enabling decision-makers to track responses to their ecard campaigns and hence evaluate their effectiveness.
